Issued 20.7.10 For immediate use
It is with sadness that the Diocese has heard of the death, on Sunday July 18th, 2010, of former Dean of Ripon Cathedral, the Very Revd John Methuen.
The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, the Rt Revd John Packer, said, "Although the circumstances of Dean John Methuen's departure from Ripon Cathedral were sad, he will also be remembered for his commitment and enthusiasm in promoting and developing the ministry of the Cathedral, his strong emphasis on justice and peace, and his generosity and welcome in allowing the Cathedral to be a place used by many groups and causes. I am saddened by the news of his death at such a relatively early age, and many in the city of Ripon and diocese as a whole will mourn his passing."
The Very Revd Keith Jukes, Dean of Ripon commented: “I join with many others in the City of Ripon in sending condolences to John’s family at this time of bereavement. He served the Cathedral of Ripon for many years and will be remembered for his focus on the rights of the individual and the quest for justice across the world. His personal generosity in offering hospitality and welcome to so many people means that his legacy and ministry will live on”.
