Interview with Bishop Packer

In addition to national media, there are scores of media outlets covering the Diocese. They include three daily regional newspapers, three BBC local radio stations, several  weekly newspapers, and regional BBC and ITV programmes from Newcastle and Leeds.

Many larger publications and broadcasters feed into smaller publications or very specific groups and communities. The key aspects to the media function are:


a) Producing regular news releases
b) Providing a 24 hr reactive press enquiry service

c) Handling interview requests, and responding to media requests
c) Supporting mission initiatives
d) Developing a specialist list of spokespeople available for comment
e) Providing training for parishes on raising their own profile and communicating good news

f) In addition to press releases and events, the media also ‘discover’ stories through Together and the website

6. General diocesan communications

Working closely with the Diocesan Secretary, Bishops’ Staff, the Mission Resourcing Team, and Resource ministers to deliver better communications within and from the diocese.

Within the diocese, the Press and Communications officer is a member of or regularly meets with::

  • Diocesan Synod

  • Bishop’s Council

  • Mission Resourcing Team

  • Resource Ministers Forum

  • Diocesan Council for Mission (as appropriate)

  • Specific committees and publicity groups for areas such as Cathedral, Education, and parishes.

  • Deanery Chapters as requested

Other areas of specific communications assistance include

  • Clergy conference

  • Archdeacons’ annual communication, Archdeacon’s News

  • Supporting and developing diocesan initiatives such as Back to Church Sunday, Wedding Fairs, the Oakleaf service, etc

Training

  • Training is offered to senior staff and key personnel in specific communications areas such as Being Interviewed on TV and radio

  • Editing and updating content on a daily basis

  • Sound recordings and podcasts

  • Photos for publications and press
